When does a degree or professional qualification actually matter for your next step, and when does it not?

When it is a hard requirement

Regulated roles (nursing, teaching, accounting, law) and many public-sector grades require a specific qualification. No amount of experience replaces it.

When it is a filter

Many adverts list a degree to narrow the pile. Strong experience can get past it, but it makes every application harder.

When it barely matters

In some fields a portfolio or track record speaks louder. Spend your time there instead.

How to close the gap

If a qualification keeps appearing in the roles you want, closing it once opens many doors. Look only at accredited programmes, and ask about credit for your experience.
